Baharier, D'Or, Kristic and the Dautovski Quartet at the Day of Jewish Culture

Ach in Hebrew means brother. Acher means the “other”.

Thus from an etymological point of view, brother is already present in the other, present in the diverse, and above all in the religiously diverse richness that is city of Trieste.
The heart of the program of the 10th European Day of Jewish Culture, which will touch various parts of the city of Trieste on September 5-6, can be summed up in the few, clear words of the organizers: two days of full immersion in the celebrated traditions as well as in the themes selected by the organizers.

Il PiccoloAn important event deeply felt by the city “due to the historical and significant presence of Jews in the region and due to the zone’s place as a leading, authentic laboratory of coexistence and reciprocal awareness among peoples” explains Andrea Mariani, President of the Jewish Community of Trieste.

The event is also particularly important to the institutional and commercial partners – among which the Fruili Venzia Giulia Region, the Province and the City of Trieste, Generali Insurance, Fondazione Kathleen Foreman Casali, the Giovanni XXII Chair of UNESCO, “Il Giulia” Shopping Center, the Chamber of Commerce – as well as the media and supporters “who have demonstrated enthusiasm and sincere willingness to embrace our initiative” says Ron Fremder, Organizer of the event for WeDoCARE, a newly-established citizen association that promotes diversity. The opening of the event on September 5 in Piazza Giotti, with a traditional celebration of Havdalah – the concluding moment of the Shabbat – narrated by leading Jewish Studies expert Haim Baharier, accompanied by David D’Or, one of the top contemporary voices of Israel.

Sunday the 6th will also be a day dedicated to music and prayer as well as to discussion: at about 12:00 in Piazza Sant'Antonio, the Serbian Orthodox church will lead an ecumenical celebration, in which Monsignor Eugenio Ravignani will participate and which will involve the entire Christian community in Trieste.
Beginning at 4:30pm, at the Verdi Theater, a roundtable discussion on the theme "Openness and Hospitality: the spiritual roots, fears, security, and prospectives" will take place with Alberto Melloni as the moderator and the participation of anthropologist Marco Aime, Haim Baharier, journalist Giovanna Botteri, Ismet Busatic, Renzo Tondo, and Eugenio Ravignani among many others.
At 9:00pm, a final concert featuring David D'Or, Bilja Kristic, Dragan Dautovski Quartet and Miriam Tukan will take place in the piazza in front of the Synagogue.
The principle Jewish sites of the city - the ghetto, the Synagogue, the cemetery, the museum - will naturally be open to the public (with free, guided tours). Two exhibitions, also with fee entry, will round out the event. At the Jewish Museum on Via del Monte, "Besa: A Code of Honor.

Muslim Albanians who Rescued Jews During the Holocaust" a photography exhibition of Yad Vashem Holocaust Museum of Jerusalem which features the work of American photographer Norman Gershman who journeyed through Albanian for five years gathering testimony.
In parallel, the Synagogue of Piazza Giotti will host "Stone Memories" a collection of period images of Trieste before the 1930s, photographs which are part of the collection of Claudio Ernè and Fulvio Rogantin.
